Eeyore fell down a well in his paddock at Rothwell in Northamptonshire

A donkey had to be rescued by fire crews after he fell down a well in a field in Northamptonshire.

An RSPCA inspector, a vet and firefighters were called to Orton, near Kettering, after a passer-by spotted the donkey, called Eeyore.

He was up to his neck in water after tumbling into the well.

Police closed a nearby road, while firefighters took two hours to haul a sedated Eeyore out. He was wrapped in a blanket and reunited with his owners.

Insp Cherry Evans of the RSPCA said "We were so grateful to the fire service for their help in moving Eeyore to safety, as we just don't have the equipment needed.

"It is amazing that the donkey escaped with only a few scratches, and it is thanks to the person who spotted him and the firefighters from Kettering, Mereway, The Mounts and Wellingborough that he is alive and well."
