New police shirts look 'military'
New uniforms
New uniforms with blue or black shirts designed for comfort
A police force has denied its new-look uniform makes its officers appear "paramilitary".

New blue or black shirts will be worn by Northamptonshire constables from Monday but the change has already caused some controversy.

When asked by the BBC, one resident said the officers appeared "military" and another even said they looked like nightclub bouncers.

Police are bringing in the garments to wear under body armour.

Deputy chief constable Davina Logan said: "We are sensitive to concerns but the conclusion was that this is a modern look which will go down well.

"These new under body-armour garments are rather like t-shirts made from a flexible and breathable fabric.

"They have not got a collar or tie but a zip up collar that is more modern and comfortable to wear."

The black or blue zip-up T shirts are made from fabric commonly found in football shirts and are seen as a dramatic departure from the more formal look of previous uniforms.

By next month all front line offices in Northamptonshire will be wearing the new uniform.

Most police forces in the country are undecided about this new look but will be watching to see how it is received in Northamptonshire.
