County's parks win civic awards
Irchester Country Park
Irchester Park is one of five commended by the Civic Trust
All five of Northamptonshire County Council's country parks have been given awards for excellence.

Brixworth, Barnwell, Irchester, Fermyn Woods and Sywell country parks were named Green Flag Award winners 2007.

Sywell has been awarded the status for the first time. The awards are the national standard for parks and green spaces, run by the Civic Trust.

Sites are judged on how welcoming, safe and well-maintained they are, as well as how involved local people are.

The judges also look at how their management plans balance the needs of recreation and the environment.

Cabinet member for commercial operations and asset management Andre Gonzalez de Savage said: "I am delighted that all our five parks have now received these prestigious awards.

"They are a real tribute to the hard work of everyone at the parks, and we are very proud that the quality of service is being nationally recognised in this way."

Last year the five country parks attracted about two million visitors.
