Plans could see RAF bases close

Two North Yorkshire RAF bases could face closure under proposals being considered by the Ministry of Defence.

The plans could see all RAF fast jet training moved to a base in Anglesey which could lead to the closure of RAF Linton-on-Ouse and RAF Leeming.

In a statement the MoD said it was "challenging times" and it routinely reviewed spending "to ensure that best use is made of the defence budget".

The MoD said a decision would not be made until the new year.

Meanwhile, Anglesey council's head of economic development, Sasha Wynn Davies, said the MoD had already clearly stated that it saw RAF Valley as playing a "leading role" in the future of Hawk aircraft training.

"We're confident that the future of the base is secure," she said.

"The base is currently being developed and the county council will continue to work in partnership with RAF Valley."
