Fund for jockeys raises £100,000

Jamie Kyne and Jan Wilson
The fund was set up by jockey charity Racing Welfare

An appeal fund set up in memory of two jockeys who died in a fire in North Yorkshire has raised £100,000.

Jamie Kyne, 18, from Galway, and Jan Wilson, 19, from Forfar, died in a fire at flats in Norton, on 5 September.

The Malton Fire Disaster Appeal money will be used to help the victims' friends, family and housemates.

Sixteen jockeys shaved their heads at a race meeting in Doncaster earlier this month as part of fundraising efforts. Private donations have also been made.

The fund was set up eight weeks ago by Racing Welfare, a charity for jockeys.

Fundraising executive Richard Negus said: "This just goes to show the strength of feeling that all of racing has for Jamie and Jan.

"I think it extremely fitting that we reached £100,000 at Doncaster as it was the course where we launched the appeal two months ago."

In October jockey Ryan Moore donated more than £3,000 of his prize money to the fund after being crowned 2009 Champion Flat Jockey.
