Bridge shut for major repair work

Spa Bridge, Scarborough
The bridge commands impressive views of both the sea and valley

Scarborough's historic Spa Bridge has closed for six months for repairs.

Work began on Monday on the £600,000 project to replace all the timbers that support the walkway.

Spa Bridge has been a tourist attraction since opening in 1827 across a valley linking South Cliff to St Nicholas Cliff and the town centre.

Pedestrians will be diverted down to Valley Road and back up the other side during the work which is due to finish in the spring of next year.
