Residents to comment on new homes

Residents in Scarborough are being asked to comment on where thousands of new homes should be built in the town.

Scarborough Borough Council has released details of several potential sites for development over the next 15 to 20 years.

The council said it planned to build 10,000 new houses by 2026 as well as new commercial and leisure facilities.

In a series of local meetings residents are invited to view and discuss the council's options for development.

'Short list'

Results from the public meetings will help to form the council's "local development framework".

This document will then influence the outcome future planning applications and help to identify future development sites, the council said.

In a statement it added it had reviewed approximately 300 sites as potential areas for building work and had reduced this to a "short list" of preferred locations.

Jill Lowe, of Scarborough Borough Council, said: "We would ask the public to remember that just because sites are identified as 'preferred' allocations at this stage, this does not mean that they will be developed."

The meetings are taking place at several halls and community centres across North Yorkshire until 18 December. Consultation on the documents is to run until 23 December.
