Shoppers get half price parking

Motorists must pay using their mobile phone to qualify for the deal

Shoppers in York are to benefit from a half price parking offer as part of a council initiative to support the city's economy.

The scheme runs from October to 24 November and allows people parking in a selection of council-run car parks to pay half price fees on a Tuesday.

In order to qualify people must pay for parking using their mobile phone.

A council spokesperson said it was hoped the offer would "encourage people to come to York to do their shopping".

Motorists must call a York phone number or send a text with their payment details to pay for parking.

Damon Copperthwaite, of the City of York Council, said retailers had come up with the idea for cut price parking.

"We have been working closely with the city's retailers to support York's economy during the recession," he said.

The scheme is available from 1000 until 1500 BST on Tuesdays in participating car parks.
