Threatened college will stay open

Burnholme College has specialist business and enterprise status

A college in York that was at risk of closure is to remain open, councillors have said.

The future of Burnholme Community College had been in doubt after pupil numbers dwindled.

City of York Council accepted a recovery plan giving the college extra funding and a brighter future.

College chair of governors Kim Daniels said: "It's been a difficult time for everybody, especially the pupils. We are absolutely thrilled."

'Exceptional circumstances'

Ms Daniels added: "Both personally, and as a chair, I am delighted. It's really wonderful."

The school, which specialises in business and enterprise, received a positive Ofsted report earlier this year.

Councillor Carol Runciman said: "The financial support recognises the school's exceptional circumstances at this time.

"Both the local authority and Ofsted recognise that Burnholme provides a good education and a valuable service to the local community."

She added: "Now the challenge is to get local parents to send their children to the school, as only higher pupil numbers can make the school truly sustainable for the long term."
