Woman dies and man hurt in crash

A woman was killed and a man was seriously injured in a car crash in North Yorkshire.

The accident, involving two cars, happened on Scalm Lane at Bishop Wood, near Sherburn-in-Elmet, on Wednesday.

The woman, 59, died at the scene. The driver, a man in his early 60s, was airlifted to Leeds General Infirmary where he was in a critical condition.

North Yorkshire Police said the driver of the other car escaped unhurt. A spokesman appealed for witnesses.
