'Rare' dolphin sighting at resort

Bottlenose dolphin near Whitby harbour
About 12 dolphins, including some calves, were spotted off Whitby

A rare sighting of a group of bottlenose dolphins has been reported off the coast of North Yorkshire.

Dolphin watchers spotted the pod "leaping and socialising" around Whitby Harbour.

The Sea Watch Foundation said it was "unusual, even rare" to see bottlenose dolphins off the Yorkshire coast.

A group had set out to observe harbour porpoises when they saw about 12 dolphins which are thought to have travelled down the coast for food.

Kris Simpson of the Sea Watch Foundation said: "It was a large group with perhaps nine individuals, including calves, all close together, and another three further out.

"It was a wonderful sight."
