RNLI Lifeguards will provide week-round cover during the summer season

New lifeguard teams have begun patrols on three North Yorkshire beaches.

The RNLI has taken over responsibility for lifeguard cover on beaches at Scarborough, Filey and Whitby from Scarborough Borough Council.

A total of 18 trained lifeguards will be on the beaches seven days a week over the summer, offering safety advice and helping swimmers.

The RNLI said it already protected more than 100 beaches in the South West, Norfolk and Wales.

The charity said it was taking over lifeguard services in the north of England as part of its aim to "provide a seamless rescue service from the beach to the open sea".

It said Scarborough was one of the first local authorities in the north of England to hand over responsibility of its lifeguard services, but it would continue to offer the RNLI service financial support.
