Ten to 15 coastguards were needed to help rescue the terrier

A coastguard service has warned people to keep animals on a lead after a woman's dog fell 80ft (24m) off the edge of a cliff in North Yorkshire.

About 10 to 15 rescue workers took part in the operation in Ravenscar to save the woman's terrier, Bonnie.

Humber Coastguard Service say that they have had a spate of cliff incidents in the past six weeks.

A spokesman from Humber Coastguard Service said: "People really do need to heed these warnings."

He added: "Keep away from cliff edges, a lot of places have warning boards and warning signs and we really would urge people to take notice of those because they are there for a reason.

"In certain areas of the UK we have got very bad coastal erosion and there is parts of cliffs falling away from under people's feet."

Bonnie was eventually rescued by the coastal service and escaped without injury.
