Two rescued from blaze at flats

Two people were taken to hospital after being rescued from a fire at a block of flats in Scarborough.

About 30 firefighters tackled the blaze on The Crescent, near the town's railway station.

The emergency services were alerted at about 1020 GMT and six fire engines were sent to the scene.

Police said the casualties had suffered from smoke inhalation. None was thought to be seriously hurt. A dog was also rescued from one of the flats.

Police said one flat had been seriously damaged by fire and another sustained smoke damage.

Fire and police officers are investigating the cause of the blaze.

The Crescent was closed to traffic to allow firefighters to deal with the blaze and check the building was safe.
