Plan to improve Dales road safety

A council is spending more than £100,000 on making roads safer and improving pedestrian facilities in the Yorkshire Dales.

Work will focus on Hawes and nearby villages including Askrigg, Appersett, Aysgarth, Bainbridge and Carperby if plans are approved.

Speed limits will be extended on some roads in Bainbridge and a pedestrian crossing will be built in Hawes.

North Yorkshire County Council has earmarked £110,000 for the project.

The work, which also includes the construction of a footpath linking Askrigg and Dale Grange, is expected to take place over 15 months.

Councillor John Fort said: "A central theme of these local transportation strategies is that they should consist of schemes proposed and refined by the council in close association with those most affected by them - the local people themselves."
