A North Yorkshire school played host to famous acts from the music industry after winning a national competition.

Pupils at Harrogate Grammar School were treated to a school disco on Friday with performances from Kate Nash, The Wombats, Fightstar and DJ Ironik.

They won the most votes in a "school invasion" competition organised by social networking site MySpace.

The prize also included £10,000 worth of music equipment, a music masterclass and an expert online safety session.

Harrogate Grammar School beat hundreds of other schools in the online competition.

Emily Segal, head of music at the school, said: "There has been a real buzz in the school since the competition started, with students from year 9 to 13 getting involved and voting."

Ms Segal said the community as a whole was excited as they had all been encouraged to vote for the school.
