The family of a 93-year-old woman left critically ill following an arson attack in Harrogate have appealed for help to catch the culprits.

Yuen Har Ho remains in intensive care after being rescued from a ground floor flat in Newby Crescent, Jennyfields.

Investigators said the fire was started deliberately in a dustbin outside the entrance to the flats.

Her children David Ho and WaiHung Burrage urged witnesses to the attack on Saturday night to call police.

In a statement they said: "Our mother remains in a critical condition in hospital and the long term prognosis is unclear at this moment in time.

"We are naturally extremely concerned and upset about what has happened and we are just hoping that her condition improves as soon as possible.

"We urge anyone who can assist the police with their enquiries into exactly what happened on Saturday night to come forward immediately."

Two cats in a neighbouring property died as a result of the fire. Police said the 53-year-old female owner was out at the time.

This is an extremely serious incident and one which could still have tragic consequences

Det Insp Heather Pearson

Detectives said Mrs Ho, originally from China, has lived in Harrogate for a number of years and was an established member of the community.

A mobile police station has been set up in Newby Crescent and people are being urged to call in to help the inquiry.

Det Insp Heather Pearson, of Harrogate Police, said: "This is an extremely serious incident and one which could still have tragic consequences.

"It is important that the offender or offenders are arrested as soon as possible and brought to justice for endangering lives".

Extra police patrols will be operating over the Bonfire Night period.
