The driver of a coach involved in a crash in North Yorkshire that left a man and woman dead has been arrested.

The couple from South Yorkshire died after their Volkswagen Passat collided with a coach on the A64 at Staxton near Scarborough on Sunday.

The coach was taking children and adults to a marching band competition. Six passengers suffered minor injuries.

The driver, a 52-year-old from Staffordshire, has been released on bail after being questioned.

The coach was travelling from Pelsall, near Walsall, to Primrose Valley holiday park when the collision happened.

The A64, a busy route to the coast, was closed in both directions at Staxton at the junction with the B1249 and re-opened several hours later.

A North Yorkshire Police spokeswoman said formal identification of the man and woman who died was expected to take place later.

Police have appealed for any witnesses or anyone who saw the movements of the Passat just before the crash to contact them.
