Terry's redevelopment plan vetoed

Former Terry's factory
The site ceased production in 2005

Plans to create up to 2,000 jobs with the redevelopment of the Terry's chocolate factory site in York have been rejected by councillors.

Proposals had been submitted to build businesses, hotels, a health centre and new homes on the Bishopthorpe Road site, which closed in 2005.

Council officers had recommended that the £185m project should be approved.

But planning committee members voiced concerns about over-development and the impact on the surrounding area.

Developers Grantside had put forward the plans, which had the backing of the regional development agency Yorkshire Forward.

Kraft Foods closed the factory in September 2005, bringing to an end more than a century of chocolate making in York by Terry's, which began production in 1886.
