Girl in music festival sex attack

A teenage girl has been subjected to a serious sexual assault during a music festival at Scarborough's South Bay.

The 17-year-old victim was attacked at the Beached festival on Saturday night when she went to a temporary block of toilets on the beach close to The Spa.

Det Insp Ian Dyer, of North Yorkshire Police, said: "This was a serious assault on a young woman which has left her deeply shocked and distressed."

A 23-year-old local man was arrested and has been released on bail.

Detectives urged any witnesses to come forward.

Witness sought

They are particularly keen to talk to a woman who comforted the victim until event security and the police arrived at the scene.

Mr Dyer said: "At around the time of the assault the beach area was packed with people and, to help jog memories, the band performing on stage was called The Ryes.

"I would encourage anyone with information about this incident to contact North Yorkshire Police immediately."

North Yorkshire Police have stepped up reassurance patrols at the festival which was continuing throughout Sunday.

Insp Mark Grange, Safer Neighbourhoods Inspector for Scarborough, said: "I'd like to reassure our community and those visiting that this festival has been running for several years without serious incident.

"Those attending should not be alarmed, but should take the normal precautions in relation to their personal safety."
