Beach closed after sewage spill

Whitby Harbour
The company says it is trying to reduce the impact of the spillage

A beach at a popular North Yorkshire tourist resort has been closed after raw sewage continued to be pumped into the nearby harbour.

Engineers from Yorkshire Water have been working for 36 hours to fix a fault at the Endeavour Wharfe pumping station at Whitby.

The untreated waste was initially discharged through an emergency outflow on Monday evening, the company said.

Tate Hill Sands beach was closed as a precaution but other beaches are open.

Yorkshire Water said it was working with Scarborough Borough Council to reduce the impact of the spillage.

In a statement the company said that the designated bathing beaches in the area remained open.

It added that it was working with Scarborough Borough Council and the Environment Agency to "ensure public health remains a priority".
