Horse owners across North Yorkshire have been warned to be on their guard after evidence emerged of a plot to steal animals.

Police said there had been several incidents in the county of people photographing horses in fields.

One owner had also reported a damaged fence, thought to have been broken in preparation for a planned theft.

"The thieves appear to be targeting thoroughbreds and show-jumpers," a North Yorkshire Police spokesman said.

North Yorkshire is home to some of the country's top racehorse trainers, but the police stressed that all horse owners should be on their guard.

"Officers are appealing to all horse owners, equestrian centres and stables to be vigilant and to stable their horses overnight," the spokesman said.

"If this is not practical, they should take all security precautions possible to keep their animals safe.

"Ensure your yards are secure and consider having your horses microchipped. Check fences regularly for damage and ensure gates and fences are as secure as possible."
