Hidden CCTV to stop fly tipping

Hidden CCTV is being used to film people who dump rubbish illegally in a North Yorkshire town.

The mobile cameras, which cost £6,000, will be moved around different locations in Selby which are trouble spots for fly tipping.

Selby District Council said some of the cameras would be visible and others would be hidden from view.

Council figures show that last year there were 279 reported cases of fly tipping in the Selby area.

These included items such as furniture, cookers, tyres and asbestos material being dumped, the council said.

Councillor Chris Metcalf, chair of Selby District Council's environmental board, said: "There is no excuse for fly tipping.

"Dumping waste at the side of the road may seem like an easy option, but it ends up costing taxpayers' money and that's not fair on the vast majority of law abiding residents."
