Printing ends at job cuts factory

Production has ended at a printworks factory in North Yorkshire with the loss of almost 200 jobs.

Polestar Greaves, which produces newspaper supplements, was due to close its printing department on 9 April but it was extended to complete orders.

The closure means 190 staff will lose their jobs. Another 190 staff will remain at the factory to run the finishing department.

Production of titles has been transferred to others sites.

Earlier this year staff were told half the workforce would face job cuts as "over-capacity in European markets" threatened the company.

Managing director Andy Reynoldson said the closure of the Scarborough facility would take three older presses out of production, focusing output on more modern sites in Sheffield and Pershore, Worcestershire.

Union officials said they were "devastated" by the closure of one of Scarborough's biggest employers.
