Teenage cyclist killed by lorry

A teenage mountain biker has died in an accident involving a lorry in rush-hour traffic in North Yorkshire.

The 15-year-old boy was pronounced dead at the crash scene opposite the Northdale garden centre on the B6271 in Northallerton on Thursday morning.

The 49-year-old lorry driver, from Staffordshire, was arrested and later released on police bail.

North Yorkshire Police said the road was very busy with morning commuters and urged witnesses to contact them.

A force spokesman said: "It is hoped that some of these drivers will have noticed either the white and blue HGV that was pulling a blue curtain-sided trailer or the teenage boy on a dark-coloured mountain bike, who were both travelling in the direction of Richmond."

The road was closed for several hours to allow police to examine the scene of the accident.
