Delay over factory staff job cuts

Almost 200 people told they were losing their jobs at a printworks factory in North Yorkshire have been asked to stay on until the end of April.

Polestar Greaves in Scarborough, which produces newspaper supplements, was due to close its printing department on Wednesday with the loss of 190 jobs.

However more time is needed to complete all orders so staff have been kept on.

Printing will stop by 30 April, with 190 other staff remaining at the site to run the finishing department.

Earlier this year staff had been told that half the workforce would face job cuts as "over-capacity in European markets" threatened the company.

Managing director Andy Reynoldson said the closure of the Scarborough facility would take three older presses out of production, focusing output on more modern sites in Sheffield and Pershore, Worcestershire.

Union officials said they were "devastated" by the closure of one of Scarborough's biggest employers.
