Town fights post office closure
Rural post office
Campaigners have fought to save rural post offices
Campaigners against plans to close a North Yorkshire post office are holding a public meeting.

The North End post office in Northallerton was one of 29 branches in Yorkshire earmarked for closure by Royal Mail earlier this month.

William Hague, the Conservative MP for nearby Richmond, is backing the campaign to keep the branch open.

He will attend the meeting, which is being held in Northallerton Methodist Church, to discuss the way forward.

The 29 Yorkshire post office closures are part of a wider plan, which was first announced in November, to reduce the number of branches nationally by up to 2,500.

Post Office bosses claim the plans mean that 99% of the population will be within a mile of an alternative branch.

People have until 9 April to give their views on the proposals.

A branch in Cold Bath Road, Harrogate was recently given a reprieve after 11,000 residents signed a petition against its planned closure.
