The man swam through Whitby Harbour to escape his attackers
A man was forced to escape a violent attack by plunging into Whitby Harbour and swimming to safety.

The 20-year-old suffered cuts and bruises as he walked home through the Esk Terrace, Windsor Terrace and Bog Hall area of Whitby, police said.

Two men, aged 19 and 20, are in police custody.

North Yorkshire Police are appealing for witnesses who may have seen three men in the area between 1115 BST and 0030 BST on Sunday 9 September.

After swimming through the harbour to New Quay Road, the man raised the alarm and was taken to hospital.

He was treated for his injuries and for swallowing seawater.

He has now been discharged from hospital.
