The funerals have taken place of four members of the same South Tyneside family who were killed in a crash earlier this month.

Paula Gilbert, 29, her partner Neil Jex, 37, and sons Tristan, three, and Kaiden, seven months, died on the A1 in North Yorkshire on 3 March.

Ms Gilbert's eldest son Macauley, eight, was the only survivor.

The services were held at South Tyneside Crematorium, South Shields, on Monday afternoon.

The family had been heading from their home on South Tyneside to the Blackburn area of Lancashire to see relatives when the crash happened.

Their Citroen Saxo is thought to have left the road and collided with a tree near the village of Kirby Fleetham, near Catterick.

The driver of a Ford Transit van was arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving and bailed pending further inquiries.

Macauley Gilbert is being treated for two broken legs and a broken wrist at Middlesbrough's James Cook Hospital.

An appeal fund set up by the Yorkshire Air Ambulance crew which rescued him has so far raised more than £27,000.
