A woman was sexually assaulted by three men in broad daylight
An attack on a man in York city centre on Thursday night is being treated by detectives as attempted murder.

The 34-year-old man was found in Micklegate after police received reports of an assault at 1930 GMT.

He had been stabbed in the abdomen and is in a poorly but stable condition. A 31-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the incident.

In a separate incident just half an hour earlier, a woman was sexually assaulted in West Bank Park, Holgate.

She was walking her dog near the park's monument when she was confronted by three men who pushed her to the ground and assaulted her.

The woman, in her 30s, was later found semi-unconscious by her son and was taken to hospital where she is now recovering.

She has received treatment for a cut to her abdomen, police said.

'Vicious attack'

Det Supt Lewis Raw, from North Yorkshire Police, said: "This was a vicious and unprovoked attack on a member of the public, in a public place in broad daylight. It's imperative that we catch the three men as soon as possible to protect the public."

One of the men was white, aged 20-30, of medium build, wearing a light blue cap and a T-shirt.

The second was of Afro-Caribbean appearance, aged in his late 20s, of stocky build, with dreadlocks tied in a pony tail. He had a Birmingham accent.

The third man was mixed race, 5ft 6ins tall and wearing a T-shirt.

Police have appealed for anyone with information to come forward. They want to speak to a couple seen walking a dog in the park at the time of the assault.

Police do not believe the two attacks were connected.
