Abbey 'top Yorkshire beauty spot'
Fountains Abbey
The ruins of the Cistercian abbey attract 300,000 visitors a year
Fountains Abbey has been voted the number one beauty spot in Yorkshire.

The 800-year-old abbey and its estate near Ripon, classed as a World Heritage Site, topped a poll of county adults.

The North York Moors setting for TV's Heartbeat, Goathland, came in second place, followed closely by the Peak District National Park.

The research was carried out from 8-15 June on behalf of financial group ING Direct by researchers at YouGov who questioned 497 people aged 18 and over.

Over half (55%) of those surveyed said Yorkshire had the best scenery in the UK, and three quarters (73%) said protecting these areas was of the utmost importance.
