Base trespassing suspects bailed

Two grandmothers who were arrested under anti-terror legislation have had their bail extended for a third time.

Campaigners Helen John, 68, and Sylvia Boyes, 61, were arrested in April while protesting outside US military base RAF Menwith Hill in North Yorkshire.

The pair, from West Yorkshire, were the first to be arrested under the new Serious Organised Crime and Police Act.

They have been bailed until 17 June when they will have to report back to officers in Harrogate.

A spokesman for the Ministry of Defence said the Attorney General and Crown Prosecution Service were still considering the case.

Mrs John and Mrs Boyes have claimed they simply walked around a ramp at the entry to the base that was designed to keep vehicles out.

They were allegedly carrying cable cutters and a hammer when they were arrested and could face up to 10 years in prison if deemed to have "gone equipped" to commit an offence at the base.
