Taxi firms in part of North Yorkshire are working with the police to stop bogus drivers and promote safer travel.
About 10,000 leaflets are being distributed across Ryedale explaining how to identify genuine private hire vehicles and hackney carriages.
The council denied having a problem with bogus taxis but said incidents in surrounding cities had prompted them to take preventative measures.
Advice includes checking the driver's licence is clearly visible in the car.
A council spokeswoman said: "If one of our residents reads the leaflet then, while on a night out, refrains from getting into a vehicle that isn't licensed, it has been well worth doing."
