A tanker carrying more than 4,000 litres of fuel overturned near Selby in North Yorkshire after sliding on ice on Wednesday morning.
The driver, who was uninjured, managed to avoid veering down a steep embankment by steering the lorry into a field, where the vehicle overturned.
The heavily-laden lorry was travelling on Ing Thorne Lane near the village of Monk Fryston when it started sliding.
North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue said the driver's action averted a disaster.
The vehicle was carrying 1,100 litres of kerosene and 3,000 litres of red diesel.
