Moors crackdown on illegal signs

The national park authority wants to keep the North York Moors sign free
Illegal road side signs are being targeted in a crackdown by the North York Moors national park authority.

Park bosses said there had been a significant growth in the number of inappropriate signs being erected in the park without planning permission.

Offenders will have their signs removed and risk court action and fines.

The park authority is now urging people to alert them to any signs within the park so they can investigate and take the necessary action.

The authority's development control officer Mark Hill said the signs were a blot on the moors' landscape.

"The growth of these signs in our countryside is yet another example of the encroachment of commercialism on our otherwise treasured spaces," he said.

"Inappropriate signs are out of place in this special landscape and we are striving to minimise their impact as much as possible."
