A life peerage is to be given to the retiring Archbishop of York, Dr David Hope, it has been announced.
Dr Hope takes up his new post in February
Prime Minister Tony Blair personally recommended the peerage for Dr Hope who is leaving to become a parish priest in Ilkley, West Yorkshire.
The peerage is non-political and the former archbishop is expected to sit as a crossbencher in the House of Lords.
He was ordained as a curate in Liverpool in 1965 and was appointed Archbishop of York in 1995.
