Man dies after boat rescue bid
A man has died trying to recover a rowing boat adrift in Whitby Harbour.

The 31-year-old was at a party on Tate Hill Beach on Friday night when he swam out in an attempt to recover his friend's boat.

A member of the public used a canoe to reach the man, but he was unconscious by the time they got back to the shore. He later died at Scarborough Hospital.

Humber coastguards said people should always consider the dangers before entering the water.

Watch officer Mike Puplett said: "On this occasion, another member of the public was also put at risk attempting to rescue the man.

"We would urge members of the public that if they see anyone in danger to call 999 and ask for the coastguard."
