Armed police were called to Richmond in North Yorkshire after reports that two men were seen carrying a gun.
Officers went to the area near the swimming pools at 1205 BST on Saturday after CCTV operators saw a gun being waved about by one of the men.
A ball bearing gun was later recovered and a police spokesman condemned people who carry weapons in public.
He said "thoughtless actions could end up proving tragic". The pair were cautioned and released without charge.
