Working men's clubs under threat
Property developers have applied to build on the site of another working men's club in York.

Plans have been submitted to pull down the Promenade Club on St Benedict's Road and replace it with flats.

At least three other clubs in York, in Fulford, Layerthorpe and Leeman Road, have already shut with owners saying they cannot recruit younger members.

Strong demand for housing in the city means property developers are keen to invest in such sites.

However, one club, St Lawrence's on Lawrence Street, is looking to move into larger premises and sell off the old site for housing.
