Ice causes problems for motorists
Cars in snow
More snow fell on Wednesday night
Motorists in Yorkshire are still being warned to take care after another night of sub-zero temperatures.

The worst affected areas on Thursday were East Yorkshire and the Scarborough and Whitby areas.

Drifting snow and ice caused a number of minor roads to be closed although main routes remained open.

In Sheffield, motorists were hoping there would be no repeat of Wednesday night's problems when rush hour traffic ground to a halt.

Schools shut

Some drivers in the city centre took an hour to travel a few yards and Supertram services were also disrupted.

Wayne Southall from Sheffield City Council told BBC Radio Sheffield that the gridlock was not caused by a lack of salt on the roads.

The problem was, he said, that most city centre workers left for home around the same time in a bid to beat the weather.

A 78-year-old man died when his Range Rover left a snow-covered private road on Wednesday afternoon at Ravensthorpe Manor, Boltby near Thirsk. The vehicle overturned on a bend and ended up in a field.

More snow fell on Wednesday night over the Wolds in East Yorkshire with reports of cars being abandoned on some roads.

Thousands of children had a day off school on Thursday.

Around 60 schools in North Yorkshire, East Yorkshire and northern Lincolnshire were shut because of the weather.
