Top-ranked young players will be at the tournament
The biggest prize in British chess is being offered by a prestigious North Yorkshire college.

A chess competition is being staged at Ampleforth College with a prize valued at over £20,000 including a two-year scholarship at the leading college.

Between 80 and 100 top young chess players are expected to compete in the tournament at the Catholic independent school.

A current pupil, Chetan Deva won a sixth-form scholarship at the college at a similar tournament in 2000.

The competition will bring together the top-ranked players aged under-16 from across the UK.

So far 75 boys and 15 girls have accepted invitations from the British Chess Federation.

The four-day competition, known as the Ampleforth Junior Masters, will get under way on Thursday, 30 October.
