Disease restricts fish movements

Symptoms include bleeding gills and sunken eyes

Movements of fish have been restricted at three fisheries in Norfolk after the outbreak of a viral disease.

Koi herpes virus is highly contagious and can cause high death rates in fish, but does not affect human health.

The Centre for Environment, Fisheries and Aquaculture (Cefas), on behalf of Defra, banned the movement of fish in, out or within the affected sites.

The fisheries are Barford Lakes, Colton and Greenacres Reservoirs, and Railway and Willow Lakes.

All the fisheries are operated by Barford Lakes.

Samples were taken from each of the sites following reported deaths of fish.

Koi herpes virus affects all varieties of carp, including common carp, mirror carp, ghost carp and koi carp.

Symptoms include bleeding gills and sunken eyes.
