Honours for politician and actor

Baroness Amos and Alun Armstrong
Baroness Amos and Alun Armstrong are to receive honorary degrees

An award winning actor and the first black cabinet minister in Britain are to receive honorary degrees at the University of East Anglia this year.

Actor Alun Armstrong is being made an honorary doctor of letters.

He is known for television parts in Little Dorritt, New Tricks, Between the Sheets and Our Friends in the North.

Politician Baroness Amos is a life peer who was secretary of state for international development and leader of the House of Lords.

The former foreign office minister receives an honorary doctorate of civil law.

Mr Armstrong's first film was Get Carter in 1971 and he is a previous winner of the Laurence Olivier Award.

Ten other honorary degrees are being awarded by the university mainly to people who have made a remarkable contribution to the arts, science and learning.
