Cash to turn chapel into arts hub

It is hoped the arts centre will become a community hub

A chapel in a Norfolk coastal town is to become an arts centre, thanks to a £3m grant.

Great Yarmouth will receive the money to regenerate the Deneside area of the town and develop the Grade I listed chapel into an arts centre.

Historic buildings in King Street will also be repaired, and the work will allow St George's Plain to be used as an outdoor public space.

The money is from the government's Sea Change programme for coastal resorts.

The programme aims to put culture at the heart of regenerating England's seaside resorts by investing in arts, public space, cultural assets and heritage projects.

Communities Secretary Hazel Blears said: "It is vital that we continue to invest our seaside towns and regenerate the soul of our most-loved British holiday destinations so they can take advantage of the economic upturn, when it comes, and pack their promenades once again."
