A woman was arrested after a child was found locked in a car in Norfolk.

Police smashed a window of the vehicle to reach the girl, aged about 18 months, after shoppers in Dereham raised the alarm on Thursday.

A police spokesman said the child was asleep and was monitored but then woke up and became distressed.

The spokesman added: "A decision was taken to remove the child from the vehicle for safety reasons. The child is safe and well."

The woman was later released on bail.
