Workshop fire leads to evacuation

Great Yarmouth workshop fire
The fire that caused an evacuation also destroyed a workshop

About 120 people had to leave their homes in Norfolk in the middle of the night after oxyacetylene gas cylinders were found inside a blazing workshop.

Firefighters and police were called to the workshop in Albert Road, Great Yarmouth just before 0300 GMT.

A police spokeswoman said: "There were a number of oxyacetylene gas cylinders at the premises so people were evacuated as a precaution."

They were taken to the resort's Marina Centre but allowed home at 0600 GMT.

The police spokeswoman said the fire had been brought under control and crews were now damping down.

A total of 40 firefighters tackled the blaze

At the height of the blaze 42 firefighters were tackling the flames.

"Emergency services are expected to remain at the scene for a number of hours," the spokeswoman said.

"There are no injuries reported. At this stage the fire is being treated as suspicious and a police and fire investigation will be launched in due course.

"Norfolk Constabulary would like to advise people in properties outside the evacuation area that there is no need for concern."
