Man punched dead banker's cousin

A carpenter has admitted assaulting the cousin of a banker who died after an attack in Norwich on a night out.

Daniel Moy, 21, of Costessey, Norwich, was sentenced at Norwich Magistrates Court to 100 hours of unpaid work for punching Sean Ryan in the face.

Moy said he lashed out after feeling intimidated when approached by Mr Ryan.

Prosecutors said Moy had no involvement in a later incident which led to the death of 45-year-old Hertfordshire banker Frank McGarahan.

The court heard Moy, a carpenter, had been in the centre of Norwich looking for a taxi after a night out with friends when they were approached by Mr Ryan and two others.

He threw the punch and ran away but the attack was captured on CCTV.

Moy was told to pay Mr Ryan £50 compensation and ordered to pay costs of £60.

Mr McGarahan, chief operating officer for Barclays Wealth and from Ware in Hertfordshire, died in hospital after an incident in Norwich city centre in the early hours of 28 September.

Two brothers, Tom and Ben Cowles, aged 21 and 20, from Norwich, have been accused of his murder and are awaiting trial.
