A man has been jailed for life for murdering his 79-year-old neighbour in a "frenzied" hammer attack.

Colin Barker, 64, of Sun Barn Walk, Reepham, Norfolk, was found guilty at Norwich Crown Court of killing Heather Burton on 3 November last year.

The court heard how Mrs Burton was found in a pool of blood in her kitchen at Sun Barn Walk - having been struck with a hammer more than 14 times.

Barker was told he would serve 15 years before being considered for parole.

Barker, who had become a close friend of his neighbour, had maintained his innocence during the two week trial.

The court heard that on the afternoon of the murder, Barker and Mrs Burton had an argument.

Judge Peter Jacobs said Barker had "completely lost it" after an argument and became "completely enraged".

"This was a frightening crime and the starting point for the minimum sentence is 15 years, by that time you will be 80," he said.

"It is a sad fact that most murders do not happen by chance but in the context of close relationships that go wrong."
