Used cooking oil electricity plan

Cooking oil could be recycled to generate electricity under a new scheme managed by a local authority.

Norfolk County Council wants residents to dump used cooking oil at recycling centres so it can be turned into fuel.

"Norfolk disposes of about 3,500 tonnes of cooking oil which, if collected and refined, could generate 13,000 megawatt hours of electricity per annum.

"That's equivalent to the annual usage of 2,200 households - a town around the size of Cromer," a spokeswoman said.

Experts estimate that 225,000 tonnes of used cooking oil is thrown away every year in the UK.
