Text monitors teenagers' diabetes

Diabetic teenagers in Norfolk are using mobile phones to help manage their blood glucose levels.

The children with Type 1 diabetes need to take regular injections of insulin and monitor their glucose levels.

They can now use a special adapter fitted to a normal blood glucose meter which sends results to a mobile phone, and then to a secure hospital database.

The software can be used for children, parents and health professionals to access blood results quickly

The children's diabetes team at the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital is working with t+ Medical which provides the software.

Consultant paediatrician Dr Nandu Thalange said: "Maintaining good blood glucose control is very important and this technology helps us access blood test results and take action accordingly.

"There are also big benefits for parents and carers as they can monitor their children's diabetes from a distance."
